Another rant about America’s food industry

Seriously, America? Really? Introducing the KFC “Double-Down” sandwich (with fried chicken substituting as bread.) We’re killing ourselves! Photo by Dan Kremer/AP Photo

So, when did we replace sandwich bread with the stuff that’s supposed to go in the middle of the sandwich? Fast food restaurants are replacing sandwich bread with waffles and pancakes, and now it looks like KFC is skipping the middle man too by making bacon and cheese sandwiches, using FRIED CHICKEN PATTIES as the “bread”.

I swear, I’m not some vegetarian, granola-eating, birkenstock-wearing peacenik hippie, but am I the ONLY one who is caught off guard when I see new culinary “inventions” like the “Double-Down” sandwich or chocolate-covered bacon?

Sorry if I sound like a food snob … Honestly, I’m still at Burger King or iHop once a week or so. But I’m worried about my son’s food future … between high fructose corn syrup, his school lunch menu (where they serve nothing but junk,) and my crappy cooking skills, he may not have the deck stacked in his favor when not eating at home. Guess I will have to learn to cook so Muna and I can double-up on cooking healthy at home. I think I’ll also have to allot more money to our food budget, since the cost of a healthy salad is about $7. (Meanwhile, I’m sure I can get two of these “tasty” no-bread, 540-calorie sandwiches for under $3 during their promotion.
